"Watch out! Watch out!" Minerva grabbed the dashboard. "You'll crash into the house!"

Jacob gasped as the side of the house loomed up ahead of them. He swung the steering wheel left. Too far. The car crashed into the laurel hedge instead and came to an abrupt stop. He pitched forward, bashing his chin. The motor stalled.

"Now look what you made me do!" he yelled, clutching his throbbing chin.

"What I made you do?” his sister yelled back. “What do you mean? You’re supposed to watch where you’re going!"

Fifteen year old Jacob and his eighteen year old sister, Minerva are forced to go on a ‘family’ trip to drop off Minerva at college in Winnipeg. Although Jacob and Minerva have the red Mini Cooper, so they don’t have to travel with the endlessly annoying twins, and their equally annoying dad, Fred Finkle, the penny-pinching Englishman. But during an overnight stop, Toby, a 13-year-old girl, sneaks into their Mini to get away from her very religious community in the Kootenays. Her dad wants to send her off to the other side of the country to marry some old man whom she's heard very bad rumours about.

I really loved The Girl in the Backseat because it was exciting, full of adventure, and kept me reading. I loved it so much I almost read it twice!! I seriously would recommend it to elementary and middle school kids. I really liked the way she describes the characters. Also I liked the way she told the story of Toby's boring life, as she makes it a little more exciting. Norma Charles has written over 15 books for kids.

I give The Girl in the Backseat 4 sweet stars!
